Going beyond the pursuit of profits, LS Cable and System strives to promote joint development with the local community wherever it conducts business. In this way, the company endeavors to fulfill its corporate social responsibility.
We will fulfill our role as a corporate citizen that contributes to the local community by systematically carrying out representative social contribution activities in connection with business, sharing activities to contribute to the local communities near our business sites, and systematically donating talent to enhance employee pride.
Cleaning up the marine environment
We have established the protection of the seas around the site of our submarine business as a new direction of our social contribution activities, and through this, we hope to realize the value of coexistence with the local community.
As part of this effort, in commemoration of the 27th World Oceans Day, we participated in a marine environment cleanup activity in which the private sector (LS Cable & System), the public sector (East Regional Headquarters of the Korea Coast Guard), the military (ROKN 1st Fleet), and private organizations and local residents also took part.
LS Cable & System will focus on environmental issues near its plants (Gumi, Indong and Donghae) and continue to carry out sincere activities with local stakeholders to create social value.
Establishing a win-win model for Donghae-style jobs
LS Cable & System, Donghae City, and the ROKN 1st Fleet signed an MOU to create local win-win jobs and establish a win-win model for jobs in the city of Donghae with the participation of the private sector, the public sector and the military.
The young and excellent Navy personnel of the 1st Fleet Command, stationed in Donghae City, cooperated with the Donghae Plant of LS Cable & System, located in the region, to provide employment support after discharge so that they would have an opportunity to settle down stably in the local community.
LS Dream Science Class
The ‘LS Dream Science Class’ is a hands-on science education program for elementary school students in Korea. It is a part of the company’s CSR program to provide local elementary school students with opportunities for practical science education and cultural experiences during the school holiday seasons. Employees at LS Cable & System and university students majoring in engineering participate as mentors to help elementary school students learn about science in fun and interesting ways.
College Student Overseas Volunteer Group (LS Dream School)
LS Cable & System has been participating in the College Student Overseas Volunteer Group operated by LS Group to improve the educational environment in developing countries. Through this global social contribution activity started by LS Group in 2007, about 1,000 volunteer workers, consisting of groups of 25 college students and 25 LS employees, have been dispatched to Vietnam, India, Bangladesh and Cambodia over the past 14 years. An LS Dream School, a building with 8 to 10 classrooms, has been built every year in the areas where they were dispatched. So far, a total of 18 dream schools have been completed in the Hai Phone, Hai Duong, Ho Chi Minh and Dong Nai areas in Vietnam. Going forward, LS Cable & System will strive to improve the educational environment for the next generation, engage in cultural activities, and deliver emotional education.
Electrical safety check
The researchers of LS Cable & System, who have expertise in cable diagnostics, have been donating talent, i.e. checking the possibility of short circuits in traditional markets, since 2017. They are not only repairing and replacing cables, but also providing cable safety education to merchants. They provided the inspection service for about 300 shops in 22 traditional markets around the country, including areas where its business sites are located, including Anyang, Gunpo, Gumi and Donghae.
Employees’ volunteer activities
The employees of LS Cable & System have voluntarily agreed to have fractions less than KRW1,000 deducted from their salaries and bonuses entrusting the company to match the same amount and use the money to help children raised by grandparents, families of people with disabilities and senior citizens living alone in the local community. More than 600 employees of the Gumi and Indong plants volunteer their time and efforts to help the Chamsaranghoe (True Love Association), established in 1999, while about 200 employees of the Donghae Plant participate in the activities of the Jeongnanumhoe (Affection Sharing Association) that was established in 2009 when the plant was completed. The volunteers periodically visit local welfare centers to help them improve their residential environment, throw birthday parties, hold athletic meets, and provide free meals and even beauty services. They also provide funds for fuel and subsidiary food costs, and scholarships for teenage heads of households, and they even work to clean up local rivers and cultural heritage sites. At the end of each year, they deliver so called briquettes of love to the underprivileged living near each plant and office site and even make kimchi for them.
Support for the underprivileged / donations
LS Cable & System is contributing to building the social safety net for local communities near its business sites, such as Sejong and Donghae City. The company has provided food and daily necessities to low-income families in Sejong City who are likely to skip meals due to COVID-19, and donates about KRW100 million every year to social welfare facilities in Donghae City where the submarine cable plant is located. In September 2019, it held the ‘Support for the Social Welfare Facilities in Donghae City’ event and made a donation to four social welfare facilities in Donghae City. Also, the company has been selecting poor families from among its employees and giving financial support to them each month, and providing support for various social groups, such as veterans. In addition, it is making efforts at environmental conservation by, for example, cleaning river nears business sites.
